Unhappy Long one... but help needed *re-fokkin-solved*

The problem with geezers is that they are generally incapable of describing problems with their computers. They'll confuse the simple names of the most basic things due to their fear of the machine sitting in front of them.

An uncle of mine called up with a problem he was having.

We first spent about 10 minutes figuring out the name of a new "device" he recently had replaced.

Him: That thing on which everything comes
    Me: The monitor?
Him: No, no... the little box type thing that sits here
    Me: Oh, the CPU
Him: No, it's the thing that connects... the monitor I think
    Me: OK, the monitor.
Him: No, it sounds like the monitor, but it's not monitor.

    <15 minutes>

Me: Uhm... do you mean you use it to dial up?
    Him: Yes!
    Me: Oh, that's a modem.
Him: Yeah, modem! That's what's written on it.
    Me:
Anyways, that done with... he described his problem like this

Yesterday morning, some people came from XYZ store, and replaced the modem, and now my modem is inside the CPU. But now, some of the icons aren't there anymore. I can't even listen to music... I open up Music Match JukeBox, it shows all the bars playing but there's no sound. And I can't see the volume icon there too, so I can't adjust the volume.
That's the problem: New internal modem, no volume icon in system tray, and music not playing.

    He runs Windows 98.

Can any of you suggest anything to try out, and save me from having to GO OVER to his place? His place smells funny

    Much appreciated.

Maybe his modem was used as a sound card. A friend of mine had this setup. I'm guessing that's the problem.

Simple, the techs removed his sound card.

Sound may or may not have been built into the modem, but it was removed one way or another.

This is why you don't let them touch your computer

I dont think that they would take out the sound card and the modem. So I still stand my by answer: the modem was also used as a soundcard. The only way to find out is to ask your uncle where he plugs in his speakers. I could also just be a matter or reinstaling the drivers if they got removed somehow (maybe a detect new hardware?)

    YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

I told him to check where he plugged his speakers, and he noticed that the damn wire was in the wrong jack. The old geezer's brain did work after all.

Thank you SO ****ing much, now I don't have to suffer the agony of having to go over to that stinking abode of boredom.

    No problem.

As for the icon is the system tray, tje "show icon is taskbar" option may have gotten unchecked. Im not sure where this is in 98 as all my computers have Windows 2000 or XP.

He had an external modem before, so they didn't have to remove it (atleast that is what I got from the context)

Figured I end up wrong, but this exact thing happened to my friend before.
