Basically, doesn't do much of anything when you turn it on. :(

If it's the graphic card, I think itll have 4 beeps or something. If I remember right.

If the HD dies, It will show a message about the HD, but should still hear the beep.

There might be something wrong with the mobo. You should try the Hd on another machine. (Your friends machine or something).

Do you hear the internal fans spin at least? Do the Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights in the keyboard flash for a second when you press the poser button?

U dont need windows '95 to access the files on a fat32 (i cant remember if it can) just use a '98 boot disk and use the copy command to copy the files over.

if drive 0 was failing i Believe that the bios is refering to the primary master (witch still should be the '95 drive right???) so my conclusion is that you didnt set the disk from the other computer to slave. If it does have any markings just try a different jumper config untill it works. Make sure that the bios is set to auto detect the primary slave.

Try reseting the bios on the computer that ur having problems with and disconnecting any sleep, hibernate buttons from the mobo (incase the buttons are sticking) if ur keyboard has a sleep button try one with out one.

If the files are really important, like a thesis or sumtin, try a professional data recovery company.

My 6 year old desktop computer has faced this problem several times. I went through a hellish week opening it up, disassembling, and reassembling everything, only to have it start working on its own accord, one random day.

Over time, the problem continued, and for me this is what has worked (for me at least)


1. First, I open up the CPU, and jiggle the RAM sticks to make sure they're properly in place

2. I take the battery out, wait 2 minutes, put it back in.

3. I then turn the computer on, and it shows the symptoms you just described: fan will be runninng, all is fine, and the monitor goes to standby. It's at this point that I leave the computer on for an hour or two. Leave it on, just like that. Go watch a movie or something. Then come back, shut it off, wait a while, and turn it on again. By now, it's usually working for me. Otherwise, I do this a few more times... another 2 hours later, it'll be fine.


Try it and see if it works. (I don't have an explanation for why it would work)
