I need a file tranfer program that allows transfer through 2 pc's parallel ports. Could someone direct me to some such utility? I can make do with something simple but it shoud be freeware. My OS is Win98.
I'm currently using an old DOS version of LapLink. It works quite nicely but it eats up memory/resources to the extent that you can't do anything till it's through with the transfer and that sometimes means as much as 20 min.

Laplink is a good program though. It could just be the case that that's how long it would take anyway through the parallel port?
Anyway, try fx.

Yes, this one allows other tasks to be run at the same time. Still I wonder why LapLink is behaving that way, I'll have to take a close look at the program settings/options.

Thanks a lot.

parallel ports are dead slow, you can't use usb or something?

Or is it just very small transfers?

The truth of the matter is I'd hadn't struck me that I could use the USB ports. Do you think both these DOS versions of fx and laplink would work? Maybe I'll give it a try.

However, for the specific transfer I'm involved with one of the computers is from the Jurassic period and doesn't have USB ports.

The transfers are not that small, each file is about 7 Mb and I usually transfer between 1 and 4 at a time. It takes some 2 to 10 minutes.

Now I come to think of it both fx and laplink allow only the serial and parallel ports to be selected. I don't think I'm even going to try (moving a desktop pc from an office 30 m away from my desk!) but I'll start a new thread on this subject.
