safely remove hardware icon
Ever since I installed my ADSL USB modem over a year ago, I've had the 'safely remove hardware' icon in my system tray. Everything has been working fine, but just can't get rid of the icon. I had previously used that USB port for a digital camera, and I never uninstalled it. Any suggestions?

Why do you want to get rid of the icon. It's nice to have it there....I have one too for my portable CF-reader drive and for my MS Force FeedBack wheel....

I have an unexplainable deep hatred of any unrequired system tray icons (and background processes). Maybe its because I'm too tight to upgrade my PC, and I want it to be as fast as possible.

XP doesn't have the option to hide it within the window as Win2k does.
Sucks to be PeteD.
If you google around enough you should be able to find a solution.

It would seem to me that the Safely Remove Hardware window is probably a system service.
Have you ventured through your services?

Not sure that would help, because I thought that that particular icon appears, when the driver for a device is not working properly. If I double click on the icon, it gives me the optin to remove my ACATEL speedtouch USB ADSL modem, but this is working fine. I have tried updating the driver but no luck. This is obvously not causing me much anguish, but is annoying none the less

It'll show up as long as a USB device is connected -typically.
You can always choose not to display it as someone else suggested.
I use win2k, but i have xp and 98se on dual boot.
I run into the same problem on XP, I just hid it, as my system has more than enough resources to handle a stray process.

If that were the case I'd be happy to just ignore it, but have had other USB devices (and still have a USB web-cam connected and has been for years), and they have never caused the safely remove hardware icon to appear.
Thanks for your suggestions anyway. Each time it appears, I shall take a deep breath and ignore it!

It there to bascially give you an easier way to uninstall the USB device before you unplug it. I get the same icon for my 128MB Flash Drive. However I never use it. Wasnt one advantage of USB was to swap hardware without shutting down the PC or having stuff like this?

I have a same problem as my CABLE modem is connected to my PC via USB Networkcard and I get that stupid icon in the tray. Let me know if anyone knows of a way to get rid of it without uninstalling the device.

The PnP service runs constantly. Can't get rid of it. And you probably wouldn't want to.
The icon..just hide it in XP. Who cares. It might be slowing you down by 0.0001%.

I have the same problem with Windows XP. Did anyone ever find out now to remove the darn "safely remove hardware" icon?
