Assistance Needed

I am hoping that you advanced techies can help me out. I have to prepare a paper about new technology for my intro class. Here is my problem. I can't find the right perimeter to search without coming up with a bunch of irrelevant information. Here is what I am looking for:

the seamless technology that runs programs such as Upromise, Discover rewards, CardGlobal and the like.

I would be appreciative of any assistance that could be offered.

assuming I understand what you want - a few of the technology buzzwords behind what you are talking about start at this level:

active server pages
cgi
IIS
MTS
COM server .NET architecture
XML

I would start with XML and maybe learning what COM and .NET architecture is all about.
