I am using a shared HP LaserJet 1200 on a win98 machine and tried to connect to it from WinXp. So I used this command
net use lpt1 \\computer\printer password /persistent:yes
and it works fine until the next restart.
When you install HP LaserJet 1200 on a Win2k or XP locally it doesnt use LPT1 but DOT4 port. Should I map to this port?

Why don't you just add that command to your startup scripts?

I can do that, but /Persistent:Yes should keep it persistant, actually i does, after each restart you still have that port mapped but sending prints on that port will not work.

Why not go into Control Panel >Printers and right click on the printer you want to share and select Sharing...?

Why not just do what Sastraxi suggested and add this script on startup? And why are you doing it this way instead of the way I suggested before?

Sastraxi's way will do, but i want to know the cause of the problem., and about your method: I have shared the printer which is connected to a win 98 machine. So what are you talking about?

instead of going with Net Use .... and the persistent option, why not just map it thru windows and tell windows that u might print from MS-DOS apps so it will be mapped on LPT1 not \\...\printer

DOT4 Port is something common to shared HP printers me thinks but, why not trying it?

DOT4 Port is something common to shared HP printers me thinks but, why not trying it? You can go through windows and map, but as the shared printer on the windows 98 machine is password protected you can not print on it and you have to provide the password using net use.
