Cross language communication{Resolved}

My friend is working on a project for school and he asked my advice on how he could code an application that could communicate with programs written in another language. I told him that Sun developed an older technology called RPC(Remote Procedue Call) but im not sure if RPC is still in use. I know that RMI is commonly used for this but RMI is limited to communication between Java programs on different hosts. Any suggestions? Maybe CORBA or SOAP? Thanks. :)

What about a simple socket connection? I have this for Java-to-C and Java-to-VB communication.

RMI just seems easier than designing and implementing a new socket based protocol for communication between the client and the server. Since the details of making the connections and transferring the data are hidden in the RMI classes it just sounds like a easier way to go. Problem is that he cant use RMI since RMI is limited to programs written in Java.

CORBA sounds good. After all, it's designed to do exactly that.
