Dual Boot Question

I'm running XP Home. Is there a problem if I use a partitioning program to create a partition and load 2000 Pro into it? I've got a 70Gig Drive, so there's plenty of space.

Also, any recommendations for a partitioning program?

For Partitioning program the best in the world is PowerQuest PartitionMagic (now they released 8.0) . My suggestion is to create new hidden partition and install Win2000Pro on it . It won't be daulboot but on the other hand , it will never be damaged if XP system files was damaged . Hope you got the point

If you make a new partition, and just install w2k on it, the system will be dual-boot, automaticly. W2k recognizes there's abother OS installed

I think I'll get partition magic and set up a new partition. I'm just glad to hear the two OS's will play nice together.

yaa but its going to mess up wuth ur XP boot sectors and you will end up reinstalling XP again...

If you just want to play with Windows 2000 Pro and have a doubt about something going wrong...Use VMWare 3.0 Workstation...

And just for the record, you dont need any Partition Programm! (Well I mean you should have one, but you dont need it!)
Windows 2000 comes along with its own Patition Programm where you can set up your new Partition.

But it's not as flexible as Partition Magic 8.0

If you don't know about VMWare then you should do a search on GOOGLE about this great product...Its has got 4.5 star ratting in software industry...

Its an interesting one to see once working...

Its actually a virtual machine software. You can load Any number of operating systems in Machine...You can have even Windows 2000 on and then u can start XP in it and Linux in it as well...Ofcourse its going to need a heaps of RAM and mean PROCESSOR to run all 3 at once but 2 runs damn nice..

Thats where u r wrong...Windows 2000 setup allows you to make partition in unpartitioned space...not the free space on partition. If you want to make sure run the setup without any non partitioned space and you wont find an option to create partition bcos there is no room for it...

Partition Magic is the best...

Allright, I´ll admit defeat on that one, and as I said it is good to have a Partition Prog.

BTW: I am using Patition Magic as well, just thought it should be mentioned that Windows 2000 brings one along.

Well then trust me...Don't use it...Use the partition magig and best of all don't use anything at all...Well plan ur disk partition and you will be just right...

How damn are you going to plan your HD without (partitioning)and profiting the huge space available ? Of course you must use one . Having one partition is like having nothing these days !

Well if you know ur requirements and ur PC you can plan ahead it well...Partitions on my HDD are same since 2.5 years and I never needed to change them as they serve the purpose I need it well...

May be you need to see ur PC and check and make a list of what u need...
