User who are having trouble with their current installer or would just like to try a new installer (keeping their options open). ********** can help you move from Microsoft's Package and Deployment Wizard to Inno Setup.

********** handles the P&DW Setup.lst as well as the VB Project File (.VBP).
It is free and can be downloaded at:

http://www.***********/**********/**********.htm

If you have any trouble or would like to be on the ********** update mailing list. Send an email to **********@***********.

there is another out there, called Clickteam Installer, its my one of choise. It might not handle VBPs or LST files, but it has an extremely small footprint, looks cool, and easy to use.

I like InnoSetup. Really helpful!

Only had a quick look at Inno the other day... the wizard seems a bit simplistic and ignores many 'standard' settings. I guess i could spend some time learning the scripting but should i have to? :)

This is freaky.
My company has just decided we need a better installer than the P&D Wizard that ships with VB. They have allocated me some time to test other 3rd party installers. The 4 in the list are exactally the same ones that I have downloaded from the web yesterday :D
I was going to post a thread identical to this when I had the time...Hahahahaha. Right, whats the original question...

You missed off Visual Studio Installer from your list :(
Actually I was going to post a poll asking which is the best, as people may be forced to use P&D, Inno or VSI due to budgets, but Wise or Instal Shield may still be the best option...

I currently use P&D but is causes to many problems and looks SOOOOOOOOOOOOO unprofessional :(

Looking at buying Install Shield...
Gonna test them all this afternoon....:D

As an Installshield user I wouldnt say that i was delighted with it... seems to have lots of bugs.. maybe is much better in later versions.. but from what i see on the forum there are still a hell of a lot of bugs and rarely are questions answered satisfactorily

Me too! I use it alot for the same reasons people climb mountains (it is there!). But it is full of bugs, very slooooooooow and looks pretty unprofessional. Kinda disapointing considering how good the VB6 IDE is and how poor it's installer is.

I've been using InnoSetup for a bit more than 3 years now and I never looked back. It has more settings than ClickTeams installer and you don't have to show that advertisement they put in on the last screen on their free installer.

I use my own installer (created in VB)

Now you ask how is that possible. It's simple. It's called Fusion. I made a simplistic front installer. It searches the harddisk for installed files and creates a list. The list of files neede will be donwloaded from the internet and then into a tmp directory. In that tempdirectory I put the msvbvm60.dll and files needed for my installation program. Now I can run my installation program. When it's finished clean up the mess.

If someone is not connected to the internet then just put all data into the installation directory.

What is PROFESSIONAL, eh? You are power user, you have FULL SOURCE to this program - modify it. It really makes me sick when PROFESSIONAL people start saying this sorta things. PD&W works absolutely perfect for me and many PROs I know and you know why - we are not that lazy to modify it. Yes, PD&W is buggy but that's when our PROFESSIOANLISM comes handy: fixe'm all!

You know McGenius...

Many people like to just drive their cars.... not have to fix them so they can drive them... Even if they are mechanics.

Then same rule applies here, So you like to fix P&DW bugs and limitations Horrah!!!!!. Every one does not!

I could not, and I would not, ship my £10,000 application out to my customers using P&D Wizard to create the setup.
If I was paying that sort of cash for some software and it was done using P&D Wizard I would be a little pissed...

I am a proffessional, even though I can't spell it, and I am also in the position to makes comments like that. P&D does not do what I want it to, no where near, so I am buying a professional install package, which is expensive, but it does what I require of it and also what my customers require of it...*sigh*

VbNoobie®,

You are not going to find a site with a tutorial. The best you can hope for is to use the help file documentation that comes with the product.

You could start with ********** and Inno Setup. They can be found at:

http://www.***********/**********/download.htm

and

http://www.innosetup.com

Respectively.

From the user stand point of view can you tell the difference except maybe for GUI. Would you give turkey about what did they (developers) use to build this distribution: A, B or C package or whatever ??? I wouldn't, nor many of those whom we supply with professioanlly made btw software (and they pay a lot more than what you mentioned. The whole point of this whole thing is: does distributed program have full functionality or not !!! That's all ...
When you install VB6 or any other MS product do you give a damn what's built with? I don't !!!

I certainly know that my mum wouldn't notice or care what software was used to install it as long as it worked. Lots of installers look different - who cares as long as they work.

I use inno setup because it's nice and easy to use, and the finished product looks pretty good.

Does anybody else here use NSIS installer from Nullsoft(yup, the same people who bring you winamp).

I really like NSIS' small footprint and incredible flexibility. It's a great installer for quick updates, patches, etc.

But it can get kinda complicated when installing the vb runtimes and system libraries that are still in use.

Well, that's where we differ. If you went and bought a very expensive suit, and they gave you a super market plastic bag to carry it home in then you would not be happy. But why should you be unhappy? It's a bag and it will be perfectly suitable (ha ha) to carry your expensive suit home...The little things are what people notice...

In commercial programming, 90% of the customers opinion on an application is the GUID!!! *sigh*
Does the program have full functionality...errr...bno it doesn't, not if you use P&D...when I install an app I like a little bit of input on what is going on, what is installed and what is added to start bars quick launch bars etc...

What software do you write and ship to your customers?

The difference between me and you is that you would settle for 2nd place...which, in my book is the 1st loser, and in this day and age will put you out of business :D

What the heck does that all mean ??? Woka, you are real moron and it would be difficult to find one like you. I'm not sure where you from ( before you're from Afgan, now it's Iraq) but in any case your mentality is way below those desert people and I would have a lot of respect for them ...

Errr...should I take that as an insult or compliment?
I see one comes from a cultured background...those "desert people" actually do live in VERY large cities...or r u still under the impression that Afghans live in mud huts and wave pointed sticks around?

I to use Inno. Like many others PD&W is full of bugs and looks like it was written for windows 3.11

Yes, I know the source code is there and I cna fix it if I wanted to, but why re-design the wheel if I cna go and get one for free.

INNO is a really nice tool. The basics work fine and after you do a little reading and get to know it you can do some really nice stuff with it..

I have been wanting to try out InsatllShield but have not had time to even begin searching for it.

I've always had trouble with vb's shipped installer package...Seems like everytime I try to install a package that I reference more than just the basic controls in VB
the installer goes nuts and doesn't know what to do with its self.

For instance, PDW on Windows ME is just a laugh in the water
trying to install the required files for the installer itself is a joke, requires a reboot for every file and generally causes ME to explode...

How ever INNO is completely flexible and free, has quite the scripting language and does well under high fedilty installations.

Setup Factory 6.0 from Indigo Rose Corporation. This is a best installer I ever used.

INNO, without a doubt...!

Thanks to some suggestions at this forum..I tried when I was having Crystal Reports problems....and I havent looked back.
(forgot so much about P&D..almost cant remember what it stands for) :p

BUT !??

am I the only one who went to the third party link on the site and found ISTOOL ???

http://www.istool.org/

This adds on to INNO in an awesome way! makes the interface much more pleasant ! :D

Someone already mentioned NSIS :)

On Windows, I'd be more inclined to use a Windows Installer-based install (i.e. .msi files).
