    website layout question?

    does anyone know where I can fine information regarding website layout and content. Basically I'm trying to find out the best way to arrange the content, pictures, links, message board etc..So that it has a nice appearance...And so that the site jumps out at people and makes them want to come back.. thaks for your help!

    Here's how I do it: Visit at least 10 sites that are about the same subject or type of site you are creating. Make a list of what you like and dislike about each one. Then define a set of colors you want, and start building.

    As for how to origanize the text/data, minimize the scrolling as user has to do. A screen or two (three at the most) is about all people want to scroll. Minimize clicking. Don't burry things too deep. Decide right away if you are going to use tables or not to layout your columns. There's differing opininions on using tables for layout display. Also, keep it simple, 1)Don't use a "spash screen" page 2) Minimize the flashing & jumping & Flash graphics.
    Also give people a reason to come back always update your content. If necessary, get news feeds from various organizations.

    Oh, about colors, pick 2-3 sharp contracting colors and stick to them. Check out the wesites in my sig to see and example of how simplicity in content and colors can go a long ways.
