[this was also posted in the C/C++ forum]
Microsoft's new language, which intends to take over Java they call it C Sharp, I dont know the exact language combo they are using but on Cnet they said "C# is a combination of C and C++..." I just thought I wanted to laugh my ass off with that comment, also the benefit they say is that like java it'll be universaly avialible, but unlike java they will allow it to have complete access to the underlying OS without recompiling, I dont know about you but some of the good things has always been free like linux for example, Microsoft couldnt crush that. If anyone has any more info on this so called C# and it's possible joke let me know.

C# is NO joke........
Well,
Mate... I'm afraid u're in for a bit of a shock.. Microsoft is really pushing hard on C# yes it has been devised to match n as far as MS is concerned hopefully crush Java... Though i honestly do not see Java disappearing that easily w/o a fight... But MS does plan to make it a major part of the their latest version of Visual Studio... i.e. VS7
Here they're alos making VB more of a killer language than it already is....
Basically they're new wrinkles in the next version of Visual C++, including a new variant of VC++ called Visual C#. This variant keeps C++'s object-oriented capabilities and syntax, but simplifies them and eliminates the language features that often get developers into trouble.

So its no joke... get ready for a language war...

C# is good news for Windows devolopers who want the power of C/C++ but with the ease of Java. But you won't see C# programs running on any platform except Wintel.

Um.....
"C# is good news for Windows devolopers who want the power of C/C++ but with the ease of Java. But you won't see C# programs running on any platform except Wintel.

Windows developers have the power of C++ in VC++, and the ease of JAva in VC++ and/or VJ++(since C++ and Java structure is very similar), you didnt make any sense.

Also about "WinTel"
C# is being made so that it will work on any platforms provided it has a Virtual Machine for it, didnt you read the Press Release?

I read it, I just don't believe it. I mean I remember reading that Active X controls would soon work on any browser on any platform
HOw compatible is C# with existing C/C++ code, if someone has a huge library of C/C++ code I don't see them switching to C# anytime soon.

I dont know that details exactly, but it says it works like JAva, it uses a Virtual Machine, therefore as long as you have a C# VM(just like as long as you have a Java VM) it will work, but from what I read, I have gotten the impression that is is Coded in VB style, with capabilities of C/C++ (like the features in upcomming VB7) and uses Garbage handeling. But your previous post still didnt make sence, Windows programmers, have the power of either VC++, and they can have the ease of Java , so to me, it's nothing new as far as desktopwindows platforms goes, C# is intended to be multiplatform, so it's not just targeted at windows developers. As far as ActiveX goes, those are created in a non-multi platform language, ActiveX are intended for windows usage, and since Netscape or any other browser isnt created by microsoft, it wouldnt have ActiveX support, C# is "supposed" to be different in the sense that Microsoft provides the VM for each platform, god knows how much they are going to charge for the compilers. but the VM should be free like the IE browsers.

kb244 i think what noone is trying to say that for NEW programmers the learning curve will be much less as compared to pure C++, hmmmm Pure C++.... there's athought :-) n yes it will implement development methodologies of VB... via VS 7.0 they will tie in their new Web centric development techniques such as the ASP+ Win forms... though i wonder what ASP+ forms will be... n i do love this MS penchant for the ubiquitious '+' symbol... "COM spec's will never change" ... "Oh uh hum.. ake a look at COM+" ... "UI, we've got it down perfect" ... "VS 7.0 will work with ASP+ forms!!!" oh MS...
C# will attract by getting rid of everyone's nighmare... that's pointers... n i'd like to see their implementation of Garbage Collection.. i guess this is Classical Microsoft... wait for that new Tech to catch on see how the World likes it then Kill it with a similar very COPIED tech... from their stables...
Mr. Gates started the tradition with DOS continued it with Windows... n ofcourse Mr Balmer MUST keep THAT tradition, that very CORe of MS existance alive!!!!
As for the VM nice point, must admit i dinna notice it the first time i read the spec's... hopefully it will be better n FASTER than the Java VM...
Oh n for people interested.. if u can take a look at the latest issue of Java Report.. they've got this FANTASTIC articel on the genesis n future of the C/C++ n Java Programming Languages where they've got none less than teh Guru's themselves... Kernigham, Stroustrup n Gosling... discussing points on the languages... makes intersting reading...
cheers
