Which creates faster application - VB.NET or Java?
Which creates faster application - VB.NET or Java?
Is there anything which can be done in VB.NET but not in Java and vice versa?

There has not been a single perfect/honest test of Java vs .NET with a sizeable project, so there is no real way to know.
All the PetShop benchmarks have been tainted in one way or another regardless who came out on top.

Agreed. What needs to be done is get a common project proposal that can be put together and published on a web site. This project will have certain needs than need to be obtained when building the project.
Then host a contest for the app developer that can produce the fastest version of the application. Make it to where if the .Net side takes the lead, the only way someone can take the lead away would be if they built a faster version in Java. This would go back and forth until there were no more faster entries. Who ever is on top wins. If you actually had a cash reward for the winner, app devs would actually want to do this (plus the whole pride thing).
But to be fair, the contest would have to have different projects that stress different things, so to get a fair OVERALL evaluation of the differences.
Oh ya, Java would have to start out in the lead because the app can be used on different OS's.
