Sound analyser (graphic eq?)

I'm trying to get analyse the sound being played out through the speakers so I can produce an accurate graphical representation (using vertical progress bars) of the "shape of the sound". If you understand what I'm trying to do and can help us out I'd appreciate it.

I've tried playing around with the mixer API's but don't understand them enough (I can open the mixer device, but can't access the eq control)

Hope someone out there can help (even give me some source code to play with..hint hint!)
