can you not put a partition on the drive when setting up linux ??

i'm sure there is an option in the install, so that you can have windows and linux running on the same machine partitioned ?

any linux install wizards out there please clarify this ?

I always found Partition Magic a very good program, it's not free though but I think it's well worth the money!

Alcohol doesn't solve any problems, but then again, neither does milk.

As has been said - Partition Magic is the way to go, and it isn't that expensive.

I know there was some dos util on the old dist. of RedHat that could do that. You had to defrag first, and then you could put the linux partion in the empty space at the end of the drive.

I want to say the name of it was DiskDruid, but I'm sure that's not it. If you look under dos/utils on your install cd it should be there somewhere

FIPS or something can do it, I believe

    However, take backups *first*.

There is an alternate method. MOST versions of linux let you install INSIDE the current dos partition. You run a program through windows and it reboots into linux. It takes linux longer to boot that way though.

It also runs slower as well.

I would never recommend it myself, you're too reliant on the filesystem handling in something *else*. Similarly, so people don't think I'm bashing Windows here, I wouldn't want Windows running out of a file on a Unix partition except through VMware.
