I'm trying to connect to AIM through a proxy, but it's not working. I've filled out the socks4 thingy, the address, port and everything, but it still doesn't connect.
I get a msgbox that says "AIM service can't be reached" if I leave the service info as the default. If I change it to the host computer (ie: 10.0.0.2) and the port to 6588, and try to sign on, it'll start connecting, but never actually connect.

Your IP address is wrong. You should use a local IP address for small internal networks, starting 169.?.?.? to 192.?.?.?
My internal IP addresses all start 192.168.0.1, so i'de suggest you change that first. Make sure the subnet lists 255.255.255.0 depending on how many systems are in the link.

What proxy software are you using? JanaProxy & Proxy+ are good ones, although Proxy+ is a pain to setup at times.
AIM may need a SOCKS5 proxy, and your proxy software only supports SOCKS4.

Check any firewall software isn't blocking access via port 6558. Some do...
Hope this helps.

Paul.

i'm using the analogx proxy v4.12. i'm pretty sure it allows socks 4 & 5 because in the readme, it says that AIM works fine w/it. i don't think that the ip address is wrong either (unless i dont know what im talking about which i hope is the case), because in the network connections, i set the two computers ip addresses to 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 just to test it out, and it seems to work because i can surf the web through opera and stuff, but the aim thing doesn't work.
like i said, i hope i dont know what i'm tlaking about and you can help me. thanks.

Under "Private IP address ranges" (that was the first one I came across). 10.0.0.1 is a perfectly reasonable address to use :)

aim has to run through socks5 w/the authentication thing, and i guess with all these trial and error things, i had forgotten something, but i've finally figured it out. in prefs...signon/off...select LAN as the connection and click on the connection button itself...type in the IP and select socks5...fill out the user/password and you're in.
