RAM
can anyone please explain what the followng RAM specifications do
eg. what they do and how
- 256MB of DDRRAM
- 1536MB of RDRAM
thanx

I think RAM is temporary memory that programs can put information in, and take it out quickly. The more the better

I hope I don't have to explain the magnitudes.
DDR, double-data-rate
RDRAM, is RAMBUS ram it runs at a technical quad-data-rate

The more the better, you cant have enough, and I think RDram is faster than DDR but DDR is A LOT cheaper. You can't mix ram, you have have 1 stick of 128 RAM and 1 stick of RDram, you can have like 256 stick of DDR ram and another 128 stick of RAM though. has to be same data speed, like DDR pc2100 cant be mixed with DDR pc2700

Good Ol' Platypus
I thought it could be mixed between the same type (ex. pc2100/pc2700 can be mixed), but it would be clocked down (ex. the pc2700 would act as a 2100).
All contents of the above post that aren't somebody elses are mine, not the property of some media corporation.
(Just a heads-up)

RE: Ram
Hi All.
Sastraxi is right. You can mix PC 2700 & 2100 memory, although it's not recommended. Many motherboards struggle with down-clocking the DIMM's, so stick to one type only. The fastest DDR is currently PC3200, but make sure your mainboard supports DDR-400 first.
RD is slightly faster, but there's a huge difference in price between RD & DDR.
NOTE:
RD-RAM is being phased out, so watch out for a new generation DDR coming soon. 90% of NEW motherboards are using DDR - 333/400, so be careful not to buy an RD board.
ALSO NOTE:
Old style RD can only be used in pairs.. so in order to have 256MB RD you need 2 x 128mb sticks. Real pain, and not a good option for upgrading in the future.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Paul.

I don't know if you are asking to compare systems or you are looking to upgrade the amount of RAM you have but remember you can only use RAM that your motherboard supports. If your Mobo supports DDR then you use DDR, same with RAMBUS. If your motherboard uses 16 bit RAMBUS (the ones where you have to have two sticks at a time) it won't support 32 bit RAMBUS (it is physically different.)

Oh yeah, I forgot it does get clocked down. Sorry.

I'm running RDRAM, and I just spent an assload of dollars on upgrading it before it's phased out. DDR, while slower, is a better option.
