56k Data Fax modem [Archive]

It does exactly what it says on the tin ! lol

Data should (in theory) travel at 56 Kilobits per second dependant on line quality and ISP servers. It's capable of both sending and receiving data and faxes.

There are two main types of PCI modem, with several sub-types.

1. PCI V.90 Software
- The standard for today. Very cheap to buy, but drags the system resources down as all it's processes are controlled by your CPU.

2. PCI V.90 Hardware
- Slightly more expensive, but well worth the extra money. It has it's own cache, so all the processes are kept seperate from your CPU.

V.92 is now finally working it's way into the market, with very little difference to the average user. It now supports active caching, making it safer with viruses; Call monitoring, so you always know if someone's trying to call you while you are online (only available if your telephone provider supports the feature), and a quicker upstream rate which helps users who FTP (file transfer protocol) to their website.

Very few ISP's support V.92 at the moment, as broadband is slowly making progress with internet hungry customers.

Just one more note about software modems: Usually they will only work on Windows (sometimes called Winmodems for that reason). If you're interested in any other OS (such as Linux, *BSD, etc), you'll have to get a hardware modem.
