static
i found a hardrive in my closet, i've had for atleast 2 years. my dad was stupid and opened the package when we got it, and never installed. it says don't open enless at static free workspace. ya right! . should i try installing it anyway? (it would be on an old computer that doesn't matter if it gets screwed up)

I once gave my friend a HDD at school, and it poured with rain on his way home. He took it out, let it dry a bit, installed it and it worked! So it will probably be alright

I think they have a mountain of those white puffy things. Last drive I got came in a huge box full of them. Damn things go everywhere.

Guess...
They come in Large, well padded packages to keep the heads secure. 70% of hard drives fail due to Head damage. If you received a hard disk which rattles, it's because the heads are shot, and will probably only last 6 months, if that!
Maxtor HD usually suffer the most, but for the money, they aren't bad i suppose. If you want quality... go for a Seagate / Western Digital or IBM Deskstar. I wouldn't touch anything else!
