    DVD and MPEG

Ok, correct me if I am wrong , but this is my understanding of dvd and mpeg:

Dvd is a high quality recording that takes up about 5GB for one movie.

mpeg format can fit the same movie in about 600 MB without noticeably compromising quality as far as humans are concerned. It's kind of the mp3 of movies, if you will.

So basically an mpeg movie is the same quality as dvd, and can fit on a regular CD-ROM.

    Is that correct?

MPEG is not the same quality as a DVD, DVD always has and always will be of a better standard. Even comparing a DVD to an MPEG SVCD DVDRip you can still notice quite a vast quality difference.

DVD is just a higher encoded data.

Divx can reach much better quality than MPEG or DVD, for less bandwidth.

    Think MPEG as a stream.

DVD is MPEG encoded. Like MP3 (MPEG 1.0 Audio Layer 3 ) it has a variable bitrate to encode at.

And I agree, for bandwidth, DivX beats it for me...

I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

It is, but it's still an MPEG standard. MPEG-1 movies are worse, and DivX is a variant of MPEG-4. There is no MPEG-3 (Mp3 is MPEG-1, Layer 3). And bigger movies take up more, for example a "normal" 2 hour movie encoded on a single layer, single side disc will use up nearly the entire disc... single side, double layered discs are read slower but have twice the info.. therefore (theoretically) a 4 hour movie COULD be packed in, but since there aren't many of these it's usually just a better quality "standard" movie.

    Sorry for the the rant.
