Search, Tables

How difficult will it be to implement search for my site? Can I just chuck a little cgi thing in my bin, or do I need to include all that meta stuff in each of the pages?

Also, with tables, is it faster(as in download speed) to nest tables, or simply of a single table with multiple rows, etc.
