My Modem has screwed up I was just wondering if someone could tell me why this is happening,

ok the problem is it keeps diconnecting me for no reason, I can be on for say an hour and I will be disconnected for no reason, I could be on for 1 minutes and I could for no reason, some of my friends are on the same isp as me and they are not having any probs so it must be my modem or one of the settings for it, and am worried about my phone bill to at the end of the month if this keeps going on its gonna be pretty big loll. So i was wondering if people would mind tell me all the places of the modem configuration where it mentions any values about disconnecting?. Or if anyone knows why its happening.

also it seems to be happening (I could be wrong about this), at times of slow data travilling, say when it seems my isp is having trouble communicating with my computer, but this never has happened before until the last couple of days, I remember a couple of weeks ago when my isp had satelite problems or something, and I could dial up and be online but I basically didn't recieve any data but still I stayed online when that happened for hours (just left my comp running thinking the problem would fix itself), but now if that happened I reckon i'd be booted in a couple of seconds, but if it was due to my isp I reckon my friends would also be having problems which they aren't, and also I have an account through another isp (something called a knightrider account which is free but I can only use it between 1 and 6 am) and it happens on that two just not as frequent. Any clues anyone.

thanx.

Some ISPs - probably most of them - have a 'time-out' facility. If there is no significant data transfer within a set period of time (usually 3 or 4 minutes), then you get disconnected by your provider. You can change the time-out period usually. If you set it to '0' then you won't be disconnected again. Contact your ISP for more info.

If you are worried about your phone Bills then pick a local dial up number. Second if they keep throwing you off line you might wanna try contacting the ISP

oh yea
Are you accutally on the internet, or just leaving your computer on the internet and doing something else

Hi thanx for replying,

my isp doesn't have a time out facility, it actually started kicking me off since I used a program called Modem Wizard, which was supposed to optimise your internet connection, but just screwed mine up.
Also other people are on the same isp as me and do not have any problems it was this program that stuffed it, my isp is a local number, but I was worried if I had to dial up every five minutes then the bill was going to get alot bigger.
Yep and I was on the internet when it happened and I could be away and it would happen to.

I reformatted my comp and that seemed to fix the problem, thanx for trying to help :)

Is Demon Internet your ISP, by any chance?

I was with that ISP for about a year. They had several dial-up numbers, including one with a local dialling code - I tried to use that as often as possible 'cos I had it on BT friends & family so I got a 20% discount on calls to that number.

However, I often got disconnected, so had to revert to using one of their 0845 services.

You really should contact your ISP, as I'm sure it's down to them and/or your internet settings. One thing I AM sure of - there's nothing wrong with your modem.

:D

nope Demon Internet, I am in Australia, and just use a local isp in my state called vpmicrotech. no nothings wrong with my modem, Modem Wizard supposedly changes hidden internet settings to optimise your connection, but it only stuffed mine up by playing with some setting. but after reformatting everything is now fine, and I am no longer getting disconnected.
