C++ is the language to use when you want to make games. Especually 3D Games!
When programming 3D Games you can use objects from 3d max, caligari truespace etc.
I can recommend a good book on the subject: 3D Game programming with C++ - ISBN: 1-576610-400-1
If you want to start with 2D programming(which I think you should, since its the base for 3D) take a look at Windows Games programming for Dummies - ISBN 0-7645-0337-5
Both books are strong choices!
They both use DirectX.
Good luck!
