what if SYSTRAY.EXE <<-- or whatever is what crashed?

Anyway ... stay away from Windows anything above 95B; it WILL cause you problems, slow down your machine, etc.

Nothing! I have the same problems, IE crashes explorer.exe all the time and all systray icons are lost, to restore them just log out and log in

Does it bring back the programs that only exist in the tray... no task bar?

AndyC, you programs will continue to run, it's the system tray that crashes. the only thing you can't do is access them by clicking there

I know but some programs only run in the tray, not in the task bar so if the are minimized or you do minimize them you lose them.

that depends on the showintaskbar property, you could probably retrieve that window using api, because it's not "running in the tray" it's only presenting an icon there. Also, if it's internet connection that you run in tray, you can restore it by starting it again
