DSL Sharing

Question:

My computer has a DSL connection installed. I want to share this connection with other computers in the network, via a hub. Do I need to use Dial up Connection Sharing, or do I simply specify my computer as a gateway on the other machines, or is there anything else I need to do? Purchasing a DSL router is not an option.

Download a program, like Proxy from http://www.analogx.com and you can share your connection through your computer. The problem is that your computer must be on all the time and you have to have two network cards in that machine. One going out to the modem and one going to your hub. Then you need to point all your other computers to the main computer.

Another option... do you have uplink on your hub? If you do, you might get lucky like me, and when I plug my modem into the uplink of my hub, every computer plugged into the hub gets their own IP address... Verizon charges $5 for each additional IP address if you go to them, but they haven't charged me for mine and I have 7 IPs in one house. They must not know that their modems work this way.

We don't have an Uplink..it's a USB modem too, so I take it only one NIC will be needed?

Oh yeah... if it's a USB modem you only need one NIC. I just remembered you can use the Internet Connection sharing that is built into windows ME and up to share your connection. I don't know if it's available on 98. Or you can just get proxy from that website or find any other suitable proxy server program that you like. It should be pretty simple to setup.
