I see this a lot on bulliten boards, but when you put ect it should be etc which is an abbreviated form of the word "et cetera" and when you put ????? or .... it should only be three if you want it to be an elipse. Example "A long long time ago, in a galaxay far far away..."

Et cetera is latin for *I think* And Over Again.

Actually the abbreviated form of et cetera is etc. (always with the period).
etc. adverb abbreviation et cetera, (Latin for) and other similar things, and so on:
I told him all about the table that I need: the color, the width, the height, etc.

Bulletin is the correct spelling of the word. :) Please don't correct us. We can communicate rather well and are not as ignorant as you might think.

The ... matters if you where saying "I went to the door... I opened it slowly and inside was...." (.... end of sentence) (... there's more) Yeah... and it's etc. I guess.... :)

I always thought people used trialing period for when they couldn't finish a...
...sentance etc.

OK, maybe some people are stupid. 4 periods is acceptable when you have an ellipse and a period to end the sentence. It is etc. That's it. Obviously people love to misspell things, but in speech people don't always pronounce correctly. Here's an idea: you find the English forum, and we'll write the programs that let you use your computer. Thanks. =)

The ... is only supposed to be used for when you ommitted information. For example if you quote the entry that Yonatan used from the Berlitz Dictionary of American English but you didn't want to include all of it then you would type something like:
etc. adverb abbreviation et cetera, (Latin for) and other similar things,...
This is how the elipsis is SUPPOSED to be used. It was designed to show people that there was more in the original quote, but that you didn't include all of it. That's the correct way to use an elipsis, not to show that you couldn't finish a sentance, or, as DigitalError seems to think, to show a pause in narration. Those are all incorrect, and if you don't believe me, then ask any GOOD english professor, and they'll tell you the same thing.

As Bob Baddeley said, "Please don't correct us. We can communicate rather well and are not as ignorant as you might think." Let's just stick to the programming guys, I think we're better at it anyways.... By the way........

I agree this is not a forum related to grammar, but there are lots of not-English native speaking people around here, and writing correctly is a form to show a little respect to them (we).
Each time I find a new/unknown word, I have multiple choices:
Select Case New/Unknown Word
Case New
Catch Dictionary: Learn something new
Case Slang
If Not in Dictionary Then also learn something new, although less useful!
Case Is a Joke
Ha, Ha, Ha
Case Mispelled Word
Try to figure what kind of thing makes sense in that context
Case Else
Keep with my Doubt!
End Select
Get the picture?
And "et cetera" really means "and what follows", "and so on", etc.

Man! Three weeks since the original posting of this subject, 16 replies so far, and going onto two pages. Well, I guess we all need a distraction now and then.
My two cents worth:
Programming ruins grammer.
GoSub.
Am I rooting for a horse named Sub to win or am I telling someone to go to a Submarine?
Dim.
As opposed to bright?
GotFocus?, LostFocus?, et al.
Al.
ps. GatesKeeper, You misspelled galaxy in your original posting.

My name is my name. Don't mess with it. I just posted that because I found it ironic that we were going over the correct pronounciation of the word and words like it in my english class. And Gateskeeper is spelled the way I meant it to be. So don't mess with me.:|

I swear, if it wasn't me who was crazy it would be someone else.

Oh, and KenX, You did your user name wrong then to. It should be Ken X Unless you meant for a crude way of spelling Connects, or Ken 10. But then there would still be a space. Plus User name isn't one word. But maybe that's the way you wanted it. And this is the way I wanted my User name. So just leave it alone.

You must be still asleep. What a find! :D
Whats an elipse that you kept mentioning (i know what an elipse is in terms of shapes, but not grammer/characters). Do you mean brackets?
