Adding a IDE Controller / CD-RW to Linux

Okay, currently running Red Hat 7.2 on a 950Mhz Athlon to be a web server. I just bought a Lite-on 32/?/? CD-RW and a Promise ATA100 Controller (not RAID) so each device is on its own cable. Anyone know of any problems with just plugging this stuff in and trying to run it? I'm leary about the fact that you need the ide-scsi driver for burning and using the Promise card at the same time.

I don't see why you'd have any problems...can't you just try it out? :)

I suppose - worse comes to worse I can always pop out the dvd-rom and not bother with the promise card.

Any reason in particular why you have a DVD drive in a web server? :confused:

I guess I could see why you need a burner...good for backups...but not a DVD..

Kind of like putting a GeForce4 in a web server or a SETI cruncher..

It originally ran Windows and I needed a dvd-rom to install a demo of VS.NET MS sent me on DVD. I honestly don't have much use for DVD-roms at all yet. (Prefer to watch DVDs on a TV over a computer).

It's good to have a cd-burner in a Linux box for backups ( I don't like tape) like you said - also for compiling kernels for other devices, etc. (I found a good web site once that had instructions for downloading the source and cross-compiling your own linux kernel for the Sega Dreamcast's Hitachi CPU - when done, burnt it to CD and it worked - wasn't too useful, but it worked).

I guess the Promise card doesn't fully support ATAPI devices - I can mount CDs fine but the whole system locks up when I attempt to burn...:(
