Lately my sound card gives scratchy and distorted sound in any application/game. I have the latest drivers. I also uninstalled and re-installed it also. I also followed the Microsoft Trouble Shooter guide. Yet no solution. What can be the problem.
I would also like to point out that this problem had occured before when I had a Hard Disk with Bad Sectors. When I installed a new HD, my applications worked faster as well as the sound improved. Now the problem occured again after some one accessed my computer. I don't know what the f*** he did to it!

I'm not sure...besides a new sound card of course :D

Sounds like you installed something that's making it do that, try reinstalling maybe

Try a different PCI slot. PCI 2 works a lot.

If that's not it...try just getting another sound card? :confused:TB Santa Cruz is good

SB PCI 512 is very inexpensive and comes with 3D audio and EAX.

The SB PCI 128 is the best and highest model available here in India.

Check the cable connecting the sound card to the speakers. I once went through the trouble of first installing drivers, reformatting the hard drive, then trying a different sound card, and it still was all scratchy and distorted. Then, just for no reason I thought about the cable, I switched it with an extra I had, and the sound was perfect. It really pissed me off that I spent about 5 hours trying to figure out what was wrong with it whilst installing drivers, then formatting, then switching out the sound card, and finally unplugging it and using a new cable... let that be a lesson to everyone. Check the cable before anything else.

Cool now it works. Originally it was in PCI 2. Then I changed it to PCI 3. No positive result. Then I examined the card. The AMP jumper was off. I made it on and then pluged the card in PCI 1.
PCI 1 was very tight, unlike PCI2 which was very loose. Hence I guess the scratchy sound does not come. Also now I can switch on louder volume & 3D Surrounds, which used to mute my sound before.
