conflicting IDE info
I have a WD30gig7200rpm and a Maxtor60gig7200rpm
Id like to put the larger (60gig) as primary master and the smaller (30gig) as primary slave.
However, according to this site, "Many Maxtor and Western Digital IDE drives are reported to not happily co-exist on the same IDE cable with the other manufacturers drive. Usually one of the drives will fail during operation. Solution is to put them on different IDE cables."
So I sent an email to Maxtor and to WD asking if this was true. I got two dofferent replies:
Western Digital:
"There is no known issue regarding the configuration of Western Digital hard drives with any other manufactured hard drive."
Maxtor:
"The drives will work together, but you might notice a decrease inthe performance of the Maxtor drive. The Maxtor drive is ATA133, and placing an older slower drive on the same cable may hinder the drive's performance. I would suggest putting the drives onto different cables to ge tthe most out of the newer faster drive."
Now my questions:
So which is it?
If they can not happily coexist, can linux run as secondary slave (thats my only other free IDE place)?
