Animation problem

I am trying to show some Animation while the application is busy making a connection to a database(using RDO object). Everything works fine in Visual basic environment.But when I create Executable it fails.Here is what happens.The animation doesn't work the first time. Now if the connection fails, & I retry then Animation works.I tried to create a separte thread by putting connection logic in Timer function.But still it wouldn't work.Can anyone please tell me what needs to be done so that Animation will continue while the application is busy making a connection.
