Which printing system should I pick ?

Could somebody please tell me which Printing APIs of Java is the latest and most compatible API ? I am getting a bit confuse from some reading saying that there are in fact three different kinds of printing system available in Java, that's the AWT printing APIs, the Java 2D printing APIs and the Java(TM) Print Service APIs. Since I am new to Java printing, I would like to know which system is the best and most efficient one, so that I could spend much of my time concentrating on that particular system.
