Dell sells under-featured, often poorly made, and very proprietary computers at outrageous prices. Their laptops are nice, and their service is good, but I don't like their getting in bed with Intel and for a while Rambus, I don't like their architectures, and I personally think the computers they make are jokes. When some annoying kid is pushing them every time I turn on my television, that's when I've had it.

I'll admit there's worse stuff out there-- Compaq, eMachines-- but you won't catch me with one of those. Their older stuff was better but ever since 1997 they've been using many non-standard architectures and parts which make upgrading a pain in my ass.

Their computers also come with complete bullshit loaded onto the desktop. Dell this, Dell that-- I'll be willing to bet their OEM-loaded AOL trials and Bonzi Buddy takes up about 3 gigs of hard disk space.

They also use deceptive marketing to make buyers think they are getting a great computer for cheap-- sure they are selling a Dell P4 1.6 for $799 with monitor, but do they mention that it has a complete **** video? Integrated AC97 audio? No, they say how great it is for all these things when it can't do half the crap they claim. Better off marketing it as a value PC.

I will never buy a Dell desktop nor will I recommend one to anybody.

I understand not everyone can custom build but not only are there better PC makers out there but there is your local computer shop, which both can offer a better computer at a cheaper price than Dell can ever dream of.

scoutt, a hell of a lot of Dell's revenue come from their servers, network storage units etc which happen to be somewhat top notch. And when it comes to desktop machines, the average joe public doesn't know enough to argue with the adverts. They see dell, hear the words "Internet Ready" or something, and go for it. I also agree with justin, Dell make buggery ****ed desktops.

don't get me wrong I agree with you guys. I hate all proprietary systems. it's just that if they made a bad product then people would complain then word would get around and then they would have a business would they?

But for the average member of the public a dell pc is sufficient. It accesses the internet, it lets you use MS Word or whatever and doesn't crash any more or less than anything else...The only people who complain (albeit not to dell) are the small minority who actually know about PCs and upgrade them. That number is too small for Dell to alter their extremely succesfull business strategy. As far as Dell are concerned, if you want an upgradable pc which has all the latest gizmos and stuff, and you actually know what you're talking about, you'll go and build your own.

Well, I cannot speak of the recent years, but my Dell Dimension XPS D233 is an awesome computer. When I got this jigger it was top of the line and I, well, my parents, payed for it. It has been the most reliable and best comp out of the several (7) I have gotten usage out of, other makers etc. For ready-built computers, Dell is still the best bet for people who just want to use their comp to fit their business, home, etc. use. Most people got give a flying rats ass about video or sound, as long as its decent. Also, with the excellent service (coming out to my house and fixing my DVD-ROM 8 mos after the warranty expired) its a good buy. If you just want to have a comp, cant build it yourself, no high-tech gaming nor modding nor massive upgrades, and, can afford it, then dude, get a dell!

I don't like all the sh*t they load on the desktop when you buy them.

I know not everyone custom builds nor mods or upgrades, but I still think the best "prebuilts' can be purchased from local shops or from other manufacturers...

God knows what. Compaq does it, eMachines does it, I'm sure Dell does too.

Any crapware they feel like loading most likely...
