Upgrading from Win98se to Win2K Pro
I am considering making the change from Win98se to Win2K Pro. Does anyone have any comments/suggestions? I use NT4.0 at work and I love the stability but it dosn't support USB. Are there many compatibility issues with Win2k pro?
thanks in advance,
Michael

Make sure you do a fresh install rather than an upgrade (format your disks NTFS for added performance/security), and make sure you can get w2k drivers for all your hardware. I think w2k is definately superior to 98.

Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

Have to agree. W2K is definitly one of microsofts better efferts.
A small note: if you wish to network PCs it helps to have same OS on each. Otherwise you get lag.
Were you thinking of going office 2K as well?? Coz VB6 has a few issues with it whereas there is nil probs with 98.... Just a thought.

Win2K is the most stable Microsoft OS out there. I've run it for weeks on end on a home machine.
Great OS, fast too...
I'm bringing geeky back...

It may take some getting used to the fact that it takes a long time to boot up, but you'll only need to do it once per session
BTW, can someone give me some comparison information on NTFS vs FAT32. I'm running 2kpro sp2 under fat32 with no probs...

NTFS is more efficient (not needed with todays big disks) and has security features...like if someone else uses your computer they can't get to your documents with NTFS..
I use FAT32..if your Windows install screws over and your on NTFS there's no way to reinstall other than formatting the whole drive
I'm bringing geeky back...

i agree Win2K is good, take a while to boot, no need to reboot each 5 mins. I like it
I have a USB problem, i have a VIA Onboard USB chip (VIA MVP3) and it is not supported. I downloaded the patch USBF108 and it is working except that the USB is diseabeling it self after about 5mins... argh, it is a pain. Any ideas some1?

I got Win2K a few months ago, and I love it to death. I hate using the older computers at school now because of their 95/98 ways. The new lab is nice though with P4s and Win2K. I love the stability of 2K, and there is no way I am ever going back to 98. I don't understand why people say it's not as user friendly as 98 or ME. I think it's almost the same as 98, just more stable. I think the longest I've run it is 5 days before it ran out of memory because I use my computer like 20 hours a day.
