Standard edition is like 99$
or you can juts get the framework sdk for free and use any text editor to code as the sdk comes with the vb compiler. You just dont get the easy to use IDE.

Whats not in the VB.NET standard thats in the VS.NET Professional that pertains to VB.NET. Here is an example, Borland Delphi 6 Personal is missing controls from the Professional edition. Is VB.NET standard missing like tons of components and features? My friends son wants to start programming with VB.NET and i was going to buy that for him, but i dont want to buy something that isnt complete and missing things.

I don't know for sure but I am going to asume since the framework and compiler are free to dl that the only thing in vs.net not in vb.net is going to be the other languages ie c# vc++ 7 and so on. And as far as i remember VB 6 any version could use all the "controls" it was just the types of projects that where extended ie dhtml and so on were avaliable in enterprise and not in pro.

As an aside.
If anyone is considering VS.NET Enterprise Architect can I suggest MSDN Universal. You get VS.NET EA and almost everything else from Microsoft.

or you can pay about 4000 rands for a .net upgrade package here in south africa.
it is an upgrade from visual studio 6 and includes everything the standard edition does.
