How do people build them animated GIFs where text fades in or zooms around etc? - Surely not one frame at a time?

Macromedia Flash can export to GIF, IIRC.

I agree with Josh,

Flash is the best!

There's a lot of different export settings!

Easy to use too!

Flash would be what to use for this. If it's just general GIF animation try fireworks :)

BTW, Adobe ImageReady can do animated GIFs, IMHO much better than Flash since Flash and ImageReady are designed for different purposes in mind...

paint shop pro's animation shop 3 makes animated gifs really good, effects and stuph too

GIFConstruction set is pretty cool, and there are a couple of cool littlee utilities round on tucows that might do what you want

older versions of Ulead tend to float about for little or no charge. I think my dad got an old version free with a magazine a couple of years ago...
