Curious...

I'm just curious. Do you people have programming related jobs or other jobs?

Also, does anyone here work for Microsoft?

Well I'm not really sure if I want to work at microsoft. maybe for starters I can, to get a good reputation.

But personally, I'd perfer working with highly advanced computer animation software. Like making TV shows or mapping the future of the world in 3D etc.

I work for a computer games company. A big one.

I'm not a programmer though. It's not my job. They just make me write programs 'cos nobody else will do it. And when I do, all they do is moan moan moan. If you don't like it, WRITE IT YOURSELF! It's not my problem. There are a thousand other things I should be doing. Sitting at my desk, head in hands, muttering 'Why won't it work?' and reading out aloud line after line of VB code can strain even the most tolerant of souls. I mean, why me?

Damn them all.

I am also a programmer. I am on a placement year from Uni at the minute, and it is a nice change to get down to some proper coding, unlike the stupid little programmes we have to write at Uni. Which i might add were all in Java, and i have a very deep disliking of Java.:mad:

I have to agree with Iain, I'm on work experience, on my holidays from uni, and it's really good to do some proper, useful programming. They've just finished teaching us Pascal which I have to say sucked mightily, and now they've moved on to C. Not C++, C. Our Systems Analysis & Design lecturer said it was like teaching us Anglo-Saxan :D

Not only that, but all the while people were whining about them going too fast, when they were still on the very basics. There was me with a couple years experience in simple-ish VB, trying not to fall asleep.

Anyway, rant over ;) point is I agree, it's nice to do something for real instead of writing a program to print a triangle of stars or something.

I've Just Finished Uni, getting a masters in Software engineering and now I'm Out professionally contracting. To all you people Still In Uni, I can say from my own expieriences that the work you do in Uni is actually harder than what you do professionally (most of the time any way).

I work in a convenience store selling beer to a bunch of rednecks but my mind never swerves from programming. I took a couple of classes for VB at the local community college and since then it has became my passion, no matter what I am doing programming is on my mind, maybe I'm sick but I don't care ;). I would love to break into programming but I suppose I need something to show off what I really know but have yet to think of anything that will do that, if anybody has any ideas (or needs any help with anything) please email me or just reply here.

Hey Young Buck, try this for a project:
Make a program that reads a bunch of worksheets to an Access (or other) database, then queries it and allows updates, inserts, and deletions on a form, then based on the selections or actions generates a MSWord report. Have the program open with some formal type animation that requires API calls and put it all on a web page. Throw on a small survey using a little javaScript. Then when you go for an interview; rent, borrow, or steal a notebook computer(don't get caught!) and force the interviewer to look at your work. If you get them to see it they'll know you've got a solid foundation and broad understanding of the basic technologies and it might even make the interview more of an adventure than a chore to the interviewer.You should be able to find all sorts of info on this stuff in this sight. For the javaScript try the javasource.com.

I don't know, for some reason I thought you were younger than me and I assumed it was because you'd given me that impression in one of your posts, rather than by the numerous other ways we communicate.

If I'm going to criticize I'll be much more blatant.

I do not work in the technology industry but do enjoy coding in my spare time using mostly VB, and that is why I have found this forum so interesting.

I'm still a student, in EE, not CIS though. But for the past two summers I have had programming jobs with local companies. I'd rather be doing more electrical stuff, but since I know how to program, that's what I'm doing.

Especially in this new year and in the future, computers are becoming a wider and wider field. The pay is great!

But then again, Doctors make more than we do...Oh well, I'm happy as a programmer.
