searching a record structure

my problem is i have a sequential record structure (each record with key field) and i wanna be able to search for any of the fields and essentially filter out records which match that field (so i could say search for all the surnames called Smith and view all those records). Its essentially a filter type thing. I know i have to search through each record in a linear type thing and create a temporary file structure to view the new records. Help would be much appreciated

What is your data source and how are you connecting to it?

example:

"SELECT * FROM tblCustomers WHERE fldLastName = 'Smith'"
