    DirectX vs OpenGL

    Hi,

Some fellow programmers and I have decided to start programming a game. Unforunately for us, none of us have done any programming DirectX or OpenGL. But all of us have 5 years of programming experience minimum. We were just wondering if you all could give your opinions on what we should use.

One thing, we do not care about multi-platform, we are just going to be developing for windows.

Oh BTW, we will programming in C++.

    Thanks
    Bill

yeah, it really is a bad question, for one an api is an api, not much difference. And I do not want to start a flame war. I am just wondering which you preference that you have.

Some say that OGL is easier to learn some say its DirectX. I really dont think there is much difference in this area plus with programming exper. it really shouldnt matter. So far we have been able to find alot more books relating to DirectX than OGL which is a consideration. I think we are learning more towards DirectX.

Well whatever you're thinking of using...

    http://www.gamedev.net/ - Lots of stuff
    http://nehe.gamedev.net/ - Just OpenGL

Bear in mind though that DirectX is a full slate of sound, graphics, input, etc, while OpenGL is merely graphical (to my knowledge, however it may have limited other functions). You may find you're using DirectInput and Audio for the sound and input, so you may want to develop for DirectX from the beginning.

I voted for DirectX simply because I feel that there is going to be more support for DirectX in (consumer) graphic drivers and more it's probably easier to learn / get information on, since microsoft really does a good job on the Manual / SDK stuff.
Sanity is a full time job

    Puh das war harter Stoff!
