Java and VB Which is better

One of my friend works with Java. Other in VB. We 3 had a discussion about Java and VB. Java guy told VB is an inefficient language with lot of bugs. Other told Java is efficient only in native code (I didn't understand that). Also told when compiled to native code from byte code it loses its portability.

Please help to know which is better in what.

I just know that VB is a RAD tool and Java is a language with OOP.
