we can use the basic ideas from the main BB's. like VBulletin and UBB. ok, and dork, i am just starting to learn.

Dork 1
Nov 4th, 2001, 12:32 PM
I'm learning aswell shouldn't take to long php seems like a easy language to learn

phatBB sounds pretty good

eiSecure
Nov 4th, 2001, 06:02 PM
I'm insterested in joining this!:D

I think we should have it look A LOT like vBulletin (everything, except maybe the copyright footer;)).

The forum should have very detailed administration features, such as disabling/enabling attachments, avatars, guest posting, etc.

The forum statistics should work, also, with an option to recount membership, repair boards/forums, disable post counts in specific forums, and stuff like that. (Basically a combination of OpenBB's features and looks with YaBB's administration powers) ;) :p

hey, get PHP coder, it is a cool IDE for PHP. it will help us.

eiSecure
Nov 4th, 2001, 08:14 PM
Are we going to start from scratch, or are we going to use OpenBB as a "base"?

I think that we're gonna start from scratch...

eiSecure

Okay.:)

...although I DO think that will more than likely triple our coding time.

da_silvy
Nov 4th, 2001, 08:46 PM
OK fine, we can use openBB as a base if you want.

Send it to me, I'll have a look in about 2-3 weeks

Supposed to be studying atm....

Nov 4th, 2001, 09:02 PM
lol

It's a great big rip off from vBulletin it looks

I guess all would have to be, to be a good forum

Do we have to show that it was a openBB base forum?
or just modify it and call it our own?

What hacks do you want me to work on for it?

that's alot of quesitons

eiSecure
Nov 4th, 2001, 09:03 PM
Well...if we do a MAJOR overhaul, I believe that we don't need to include a reference to OpenBB (By that, I mean modifying EVERY file majorly).

that's alot of quesitons  Look at http://www.eisecure.f2s.com (http://www.eisecure.f2s.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl is a YaBB version). Look at the board statistics, and look at the number of posts/threads. There's 0 threads, but i've got one in the anouncements forum. If I delete that, it becomes -1.

Obvious bug there. :D

da_silvy
Nov 4th, 2001, 09:23 PM
nah, it's so that you can get rid of threads (i.e. free up space) and still let ppl keep their post count.

Like my first 1000 posts probably don't exist anymore :(

eiSecure
Nov 4th, 2001, 09:25 PM
Yes, but maybe we can fix is so it doesn't screw up the counter, and still have people keep their post counts.

da_silvy
Nov 4th, 2001, 09:27 PM
You can have 2 options.

We can add these admin hacks maybe

1. Delete inappropriate thread
2. Normal Delete (to free space)

1 - Kills post count as well
2 - Let's them keep their post count ;)

eiSecure
Nov 4th, 2001, 09:28 PM
Also, if you will take a look at YaBB's admin features, I think they deserve to be in OpenBB as well.:)

da_silvy
Nov 4th, 2001, 09:34 PM
Post them here?

Dork 1.

You live in New York and you have cable with Shaw Cable Systems?

yes/no?

Is that right?

da_silvy
Nov 5th, 2001, 08:37 AM
I now say that we start from scratch.

Using popular bb's as leaping points for code, then we know what's going on and we know what to change to fix something...

Dork 1
Nov 5th, 2001, 11:10 AM
Live in canada and have shaw cable

da_silvy, your link is down. :(

Dork 1
Nov 5th, 2001, 05:29 PM
I'm never buying a book again!~ I went to get wrox php book but it was 75 bucks (with out tax) sams was even more and I was to lazy to go to UBC just so I can get a student disscount so I bought the cheapest one they had lol. So with this book I should beable to learn php alot faster cuz I can read it when I'm on the buss to and from college etc...

Once I get more ram (wednesday or thursday) I'll ftp running so ya'll can use my pc as a test server or just find a good host with php and mysql

And since I have a habbit of not turning my pc off when I'm at college or sleeping it should be up most of the time

eiSecure
Nov 5th, 2001, 06:05 PM
Okay. I'm not that great at PHP, but I can do the design, HTML work, and graphics.

da_silvy
Nov 5th, 2001, 11:59 PM
The server is only up if there is a red tick in my signature...

I still think we should start from scratch

Dork 1
Nov 6th, 2001, 12:18 AM
Creating our own forum from scratch would be good and snooping at openbb's code once in a while to get a better idea on how something works would be good I think...

We can use my puter as a test server I'm getting 512mb of ram on wednesday or thursday ( total of 608mb ) so I'm sure that is plenty for the devopment. I also keep my computer running most of the time. It is my alarm clock lol

I can also install a ftp server or use the gay crappy one that comes with iis. That way everyone would be able to upload modified files etc.. I'm on cable so unless my mom/brother/sister and my self are playing games online should be ok transfer speeds

URL to my puter = http://phatbb.cjb.net (goes to a folder on my web page ( http://cfists.clanpages.com ) opens index.asp witch redirects you to my last known ip address)

da_silvy
Nov 6th, 2001, 12:24 AM
Your ip is not dynamic so....

You can just post your ip here.

Do you have mySQL?

Dork 1
Nov 6th, 2001, 12:34 AM
Yep got mysql. Actualy my ip is dynamic sorta well they claim it is dynamic so when my ip lease runs out (8 days) I "might" be given a new ip. I have had this ip for over a month so I think I'll have it for some time to come :p

da_silvy
Nov 6th, 2001, 01:04 AM
The network specs for Shaw cable say that network addresses are not portable or dynamic....

Dork 1
Nov 6th, 2001, 01:27 AM
Maybe Shaw is static then our cable company use to be Rogers but Shaw and Rogers switched (Shaw wanted Western Canada so they gave all there east up for Rogers west) but I do know about 2-3 months ago my IP was different from what it is now

any one know a good ftp server program (free ware or shareware)

sail3005
Nov 8th, 2001, 08:09 PM
we have to make this forum very very customizabe. we should try and make a built in chat room for each forum too. it seems that everyone at VBW is doing good with the one they set up. I know some java, and i am sure if i brush up on it and learn a little more i could make a cool chat applet.

eiSecure
Nov 8th, 2001, 08:12 PM
hmm...for some reason, doesn't having a chat applet make the forums obsolete?

DaoK
Nov 8th, 2001, 09:41 PM
This forum chat is nice because it use the account of the forum :)

Dork 1
Nov 8th, 2001, 10:48 PM
We could make a seperate chat app that can be intergraded into the forum and promote them as 2 products

A Spell Checker! that is a must for our forum. I can't spell worth **** and there are like no forums that have a spell checker (that I have seen)

da_silvy

Not a spell checker

da_silvy
Nov 9th, 2001, 02:21 AM

i don't think john will mind, nor will he try to borrow our ideas :p

Dork 1
Nov 9th, 2001, 02:25 AM
We could make it an option (someone clicks the spell checker button and it checks etc...)

da_silvy
Nov 9th, 2001, 02:32 AM

I think so, if we run into problems we can allways look at openbb to figure it out.

da_silvy
Nov 9th, 2001, 05:14 AM
Just what to start with is a problem

Dork 1
Nov 9th, 2001, 04:54 PM
Maybe start by making a basic forum with catagorys and then work on adding all the cool features. meanwhile eiSecure can work on a cool design and sail can help out with what he knows so far. I'm allmost done my php book.

also since not everyone is happy with "PhatBB" think we should still disscuss the name I guess for now we can use PhatBB and at a later time maybe when we are almost done can make a cool name that suites the forum

I'm not really that good at mysql yet but here is a access database layout that I was using for the asp forum I was making Didn't get very far with it but its a start? Have no Idea what all the types would be in mySQL

you need to start by creating a database access wrapper for at least mysql. making a postgresql class would be nice too, but that can be done later. just keep in mind to use ansi sql and not use any mysql 'features' or you'll never be able to port to other databases.

then you need to plan out the framework. you need to develop a method for managing user log ins and maintaining state. need to write a library of functions for common tasks.

before starting on the actual forum i'd have a well planned out database schema. you also need a plan. if a bunch of people just start coding you'll get nothing but a bunch of headaches. figure out exactly what features you want, how things should work and assign jobs.

also, there are so many vbulletin clones out there you're wasting your time unless you can offer something the others dont. think of what you can do to make people want your forum, because otherwise they wont.

eiSecure
Feb 23rd, 2002, 11:49 AM
lol....check out vBulletin's competition. They are all lacking the important features.

1. Style (some come close, but not close enough)
2. Features (it's either you have vBulletin's look, or you have their features, no board currently offers both)
3. Template system (lets see a board use the .style system...:D)

Howard Stern
Feb 23rd, 2002, 02:38 PM
ok, just throwing that out. if it's already been considered more power to you.

p.s. what's the .style template system?

eiSecure

where all the HTML for the templates and all the style sheets and stuff are saved into a file.

well then? why make a new one? This forum has the advantage of already having a big number of readers, and its technically really good, too.
And if the ads bother you I doubt that you will be able to make some forum better than this here without ads because it's not that cheap having computers running 24/7 with a high bandwith and big storage...
