Doing a Mail Merge Type thing with HTML and XML

How do I do it? I have data stored in xml pages that I want to display in an html page. I have the html page set up like a template because it will always be the same but the xml data will change (same format though). I've read a few tutorials but nothing that hits the nail on the head. Does anyone have any links, tutorials, advice or what not on how to do this?

regular html can't hold variables.
